Dr. Spener will talk about the basics of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and why it has become a controversial issue in the country’s public schools. There will be ample time for participants to ask questions.
Dr. David Spener, Professor of Sociology, Trinity University
Professor David Spener received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 and joined the Trinity faculty in 1997. He is the author of several books, including We Shall Not Be Moved/No nos moverán: Biography of a Song of Struggle (Temple University Press, 2016), Canto de las estrellas: Un homenaje a Víctor Jara (with Moisés Chaparro and José Seves, Ceibo Ediciones, 2013), and Clandestine Crossings: Migrants and Coyotes on the Texas-Mexico Border (Cornell University Press, 2009). His latest book is Canto unido, un encuentro americano: Los tiempos y las canciones de Violeta Parra, Woody Guthrie, Víctor Jara y Phil Ochs (2019, Ediciones Radio Universidad de Chile).
