Meeting the Afghan Refugee Challenge:
Helping those who supported our troops
Please join National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) for our Opening Meeting, where we will learn how San Antonio is addressing the task of absorbing 3,000 refugees from Afghanistan in just a year.
Jill Rips, program support manager for the Center for Refugee Services – one of the agencies helping the refugees adapt to their new country – will discuss the challenges and successes involved in this monumental effort
Since the fall of Kabul in August of 2021, some 3,000 family members and individuals were evacuated from their homeland of Afghanistan and relocated to San Antonio. Many of the men were soldiers providing essential support for the U.S. military.
The agency enlists volunteers to assist its clients in case management, learning English, applying for food stamps and Medicaid, accessing healthcare, food, baby supplies, and finding jobs so they can integrate into American society.
NCJW has partnered with the Center for Refugee Services for several years through projects where our members donated diapers, winter clothing and baby layettes for the families. Members attending this event are asked to bring in bottles of vegetable oil or white rice to help supply the agency’s food pantry.
This event is open to the community and members are encouraged to bring spouses, partners, family and friends.
